How do I make maps/mods for Aleph One?

You need a map editor or a physics editor. Most people seem to prefer Forge for map editing and Anvil for physics editing, because they are very easy to use. Unfortunately, they have a number of fairly severe limitations (by today's standards). Even more unfortunately, they were only ever made for the versions of Mac OS prior to Mac OS X, and the source code is not avaiable for a port. However, there are ways to run them, even if you don't have an old Mac. The most common way is to use an emulator, such as Basilisk II or SheepShaver. To do that, you will need a Mac ROM file that is compatible with whichever program you're using, and you will need a copy of a version of Mac OS that is compatible with the program. If you prefer to use a different editor, there are a number of options available (though almost all require Mac OS):

Questions about the community

How do I get to the IRC channel?

If you have never used IRC before, you should start by downloading an IRC client. If you already use an all in one client like Pidgin or Trillian, you already have one. Just add an IRC account and you should be able to connect. Otherwise, you can get a standalone IRC client such as X-Chat for Windows/Linux/Mac (check here for a free Windows version, and here for an Aquified version) and Ircle for Mac. When you start it, it will ask you for some minimal information to identify you. It will also ask you what server you want to connect to; choose Freenode from the list and click Connect. If Freenode is not an option (or it just asks for a server name), enter irc.freenode.net as the server name. When it has finished connecting, type /join #alephone, and you will enter the Aleph One channel. For more information about IRC, try the IRC Help page.
