Excerpt

This is a quote from a terminal (M1.02.3.1)

Gheritt White had been floating six feet off the floor for
three weeks. His feet and hands tingled, and his eyes burned
with the flames of a dying fire. He had last heard someone
speak to him as the cell door slammed shut. He didn't
remember what the uniformed man had said. The words had
bounced off the bars of the cell and rang through Gheritt's
ears. Gheritt had been talking to himself for the last few
minutes, something about getting caught, but then his ears
began to tingle just like his hands.

Theories

Popular theories behind this terminal are suggestions that Gheritt White represents Durandal, the player-character, or even Bernard Strauss and the experiences depicted in the text are allegories for various experiences of either of those two characters[1].

References

Gerrit C. van der Veer and Ted N. White

Gerrit C. van der Veer and Ted n. White are the names of two scientists working the area of "human-computer interaction"[2][3] and it is possible that Gherrit White's name came from combining these names.

Gerrit C. van der Veer has a homepage.

Wheeling

The terminal makes a reference to the "wheeling hubcap factory":

today, there was an edge. Maybe everyone had eaten cereal
with milk that was about to go bad, or maybe there was too
much smoke in the air from the wheeling hubcap factory.

There is a Wheeling, IL which is about 30 miles from Chicago, IL[4] which is where the Bungie offices were located during the production of the Marathon trilogy.

Rats

There is a similarity between the rats and food found in this terminal with the first terminal on Eat the Path and the dreams. There is a section discussing rats in the walls that some have found similar to a text from H. P. Lovecraft's The Rats in the Walls[5].

Philosophy

Gheritt White has some interesting philosophies about murder and his own actions.
