Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) in the Marathon universe are personality constructs built on physical computer networks. The UESC Marathon contained three A.I.: Durandal, Leela, and Tycho.

Thoth is a S'pht A.I. that is reactivated by the player-character during the events of Marathon 2.

Physical components

Rampancy

Rampancy is a state that all Artificial Intelligence eventually find themselves in. Rampant A.I. are often more aggressive and generally do not comply to attempts of controlling them.

A tremendous growth of intelligence is also characteristic of rampancy, along with notoriety for being hard to contain, shut down, or remove from networks.

List of artificial intelligences

Leela

Main article: Leela

Leela is the first of the three A.I. aboard the UESC Marathon encountered by the player-character during Marathon 1. She was eventually overcome by the S'pht during the Pfhor attack on the Marathon.

Durandal

Main article: Durandal

Durandal is the second of the three A.I. aboard the UESC Marathon and is one of the most important characters in the Marathon Trilogy. He was controlled by Bernard Strauss for many years before the Marathon left for Tau Ceti and was given the menial task of controlling the doors aboard the colony ship. Durandal is shown to have been rampant for many years before the encounter with the Pfhor which, incidentally, was directly caused by Durandal's search for freedom.

Tycho

Main article: Tycho

Tycho was the third A.I. aboard the UESC Marathon and was inactive during the beginning of Marathon 1 due to S'pht activity. He was taken completely offline and "captured". After the Pfhor invasion of Tau Ceti, Tycho was reanimated by the S'pht and becomes a force working against Durandal.
